Liquor makers in the country are staring at more sober days as increasing prices and demonetisation coupled with a slowing economy force consumers, particularly those at the lower end of the market, to check their discretionary expenses.

The prohibition in Bihar, rising taxes in many states and stricter regulations only add to the industry’s woes.

Liquor sales growth in India slowed to 0.4% in the first nine months of the financial year – the slowest ever in a market which was one of the fastest growing in the decade starting 2001, with a compounded annual growth rate of over 12%.

In fact, the top three players – United Spirits, Pernod Ricard and Allied Blenders – that accounts for 60% of the overall sales had no growth by volume during the period.
