The 22-year-old Amanda Gorman made history yesterday as she read her poem ‘The Hill We Climb’ at the inauguration of President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris. Her words captured the attention of everyone across the globe, with many leaders tweeting about her powerful way of expression. While her poem had a big impact, Gorman’s choice of clothes was also put together to create an impact.

"I am weaving my own type of symbolism into my outfit, and it's really special and important to me to deliver these nuggets of information and sentimentality as I'm reciting the poem," the 22-year-old had earlier told Vogue magazine.

Dressed in a bright yellow coat with a red hairband and poignant jewellery, here’s the breakdown of her look and what it stood for. A big statement was her bright-yellow jacket from the designer Miuccia Prada, which is said to be a nod to the First Lady Jill Biden, who was instrumental in Gorman’s role in the inauguration.

In 2017, Jill first came across Gorman from a video of her performance of "In This Place: An American Lyric," at the Library of Congress, where she was wearing yellow. First Lady Biden reportedly told Gorman 'I saw this video of you and you were wearing yellow and I loved it,'

Gorman’s striking jewellery was not to be missed either and the poet wore earrings and a ring gifted by Oprah Winfrey. Her ring featured a caged bird, a tribute to Maya Angelou's work, ‘I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings’. This isn’t the first time Winfrey has gifted a speaker at the inauguration. Angelou also spoke at former President Bill Clinton's inauguration and Winfrey sent Angelou a Chanel coat and a pair of gloves for the occasion.

On Wednesday, Winfrey celebrated Gorman's accomplishments and posted a photograph on Instagram of the 22-year-old's performance. Gorman tweeted right back to her saying, “I would be nowhere without the women whose footsteps I dance in. While reciting my poem, I wore a ring with a caged bird—a gift from @Oprah for the occasion , to symbolize Maya Angelou, a previous inaugural poet. Here’s to the women who have climbed my hills before.”

It’s a big moment for the young poet whose books are now no1 and 2 on Amazon. She tweeted, “I AM ON THE FLOOR MY BOOKS ARE #1 & #2 ON AMAZON AFTER 1 DAY! Thank you so much to everyone for supporting me and my words.”
