Amitabh Bachchan 'selected unanimously' for Dadasaheb Phalke award; Rajini, Smriti Irani, B-town laud 'bonafide rock star'

Thespian Amitabh Bachchan, who has starred in a multitude of films, will be conferred with the Dadasaheb Phalke award. This was confirmed by the Information and Broadcasting Minister Prakash Javadekar in a tweet.

Hailing the legendary actor's contribution to cinema, Javadekar said that the actor had been "selected unanimously" for the award.



The septuagenarian actor was awarded with the Padma Shri in 1984. In 2001, he was feted with the Padma Bhushan, 2001 and the Padma Vibhushan in 2015. He was also conferred with France's highest civilian honour, the Knight of the Legion of Honour, by the French Government in 2007 for his "exceptional career in the world of cinema and beyond".

Bachchan, whose career spans over five decades in the Hindi film industry, has also won the prestigious National Award for his performances in 'Agneepath', 'Black', 'Paa' and 'Piku'.

As the news broke on Twitter, congratulatory tweets started pouring in. Anil Kapoor, who has shared space with the Big B in the 1982 film 'Shakti', wrote that Bachchan has "redefined cinema with every role and deserves every accolade."

Karan Johar, who has collaborated with the senior actor in a multiple films including blockbusters like 'Kabhie Khushi, Kabhi Gham', called him "a bonafide rock star."


Superstar Rajinikanth congratulated the Big B, saying, "You richly deserve this commendable honour !"


For Madhur Bhandarkar and Rahul Dholakia, the actor remains an inspiration. And both directors expressed the sentiment in their tweets.

This year's National Award-winner, Ayushmann Khurrana - who recently worked with the actor in 'Gulabo Sitabo' - tweeted, "I'm the most fortunate one who got to work with the living legend. Dear @SrBachchan sir, heartiest congratulations for the #DadaSahebPhalkeAward."

Actress Huma Qureshi said, "You inspire us everyday."


And not just Bollywood, but even leaders across the political spectrum felicitated the actor. Vice President of India M. Venkaiah Naidu also congratulated the legend, calling him an inspriration.


Veteran Congress leader and Rajasthan CM Ashok Gehlot called him "an inspiration for young actors."


Union Minister and former actress Smriti Irani described him as 'a legend, an actor par excellence', saying, "no one deserved the DadaSaheb Phalke Award more."


Railways Minister Piyush Goyal tweeted a picture with the Big B, saying, "Heartiest congratulations to one of the greatest icons of the country, Amitabh Bachchan ji, for being selected for the prestigious #DadaSahebPhalkeAward. Your legendary contribution to Indian cinema will continue to inspire crores of people @SrBachchan."





Dadasaheb Phalke Award is one of the highest awards in India in the field of cinema. The Directorate of Film Festivals, set up by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, represents the honour at the National Film Awards ceremony annually.
