Ananya Birla cannot handle the heat
Entrepreneur and singer Ananya Birla dishes out on spice, comfort food and her picks for street food in Mumbai.

Ananya Birla, the daughter of Kumar Mangalam and Neerja Birla, home is where the ghar ka Khanna is. She tells ET Panache “I love ghar ka khanna. My mum is a very healthy person so I’ve grown up with a lot of healthy eating. Nachni roti with paneer, dahi, dal – just a regular Indian meal. Dal without masala mind you.”

Spice trail
Why skip on the masala? The young Birla cannot handle the heat. “People are bit shocked when I say this because it’s quite common that Indians can handle spicy food but I just cannot eat spicy food. Not even a degree of spice, my body cannot take it. I don’t like too much masala or oil either. I like it bland,” she laughs and says. She prefers the freshness of the ingredients to come through. “Even though my choices are limited, I eat a lot of what I love,” she adds.

Comfort calling
And what does she love? Street food. “I love street food as well but I try to avoid it during the monsoon. I love the paneer tikka from Ayub’s. The guy knows my order down pat because I go there so often. No masala, no chutney. I just want plain paneer with a little colour and maybe a little bit of chaat masala.”
