Laptops, for all their high utility quotient, remain difficult devices to innovate. Even when a few brands attempt to do so, they come across as gimmicky rather than functional. Asus with its ZenBook Pro Duo has placed a secondary display right above the keyboard and trackpad. Is it gimmicky or useful? Here is what we found based on our usage.

From the outside, the ZenBook Pro Duo looks like any other Windows laptop but slightly thicker.

Open the lid, and two 4K-resolution OLED displays welcome you – one regular vertical screen and the other horizontal just above the keyboard. The primary, 15.6 inches screen, is glossy and delivers vivid and punchy colours with deep blacks and contrasts. The display is suitable for content creation, playing games or watching multimedia content. The second display measures 5.5 inches and has a matte finish to minimise glare. This smaller display can be used to drag apps from the primary screen or both can be used as one big display. The idea is to keep the primary display distraction-free. For example, while editing photos or videos, tools or timeline can be moved to the secondary display or while writing an article, notes and music apps can be pinned to the secondary screen. It’s not perfect but quite a quirky feature that may grow on you.

Intel’s Core i9 9th-gen processor powers the laptop along with Nvidia GeForce RTX 2060 graphics and 32GB RAM. All these specs combined deliver smooth and stutter-free performance. Asus has added a cooling mechanism to keep the laptop’s temperature in check. Battery backup on this laptop is just about average and it runs for around 2.5 hours on a single charge.

In a market where almost every other Windows-powered laptop comes with the plain vanilla offerings, Asus has managed to do something unique with the ZenBook Pro Duo. The dual screen setup scores high on utility value. And the laptop gets all the basics right on overall performance.

Having said that, the dual-screen feature for most buyers would be more of a want than a need and spending close to Rs 2.7 lakh may seem a bit too much.

There’s a 14-inch 4K OLED touch display where laptop screens typically go, and then there’s another 14-inch-wide display above the keyboard. And with up to an Intel Core i9 and an Nvidia GeForce RTX 2060 inside, this laptop is equal parts raw power and futuristic design.
