Google pays tribute to legendary actor Amrish Puri on 87th birth anniversary with doodle

Google celebrates Amrish Puri's 87th birth anniversary with doodle
Google, today, celebrated the 87th birth anniversary of legendary Bollywood actor Amrish Puri with a doodle. The tech giant paid tribute to the actor's contribution to cinema. Puri was popular for playing iconic characters like Mogambo in 'Mr India' and Baldev Singh in 'Dilwale Dulhania Le Jaenge'. He is considered as one of the best villains in the history of Bollywood.

Puri was born in Punjab on June 22, 1932, and landed his first role at the age of 39. That marked the beginning of his journet in Bollywood as one of the most iconic villains of all time. The youngest brother of Madan and Chaman Puri, Amrish auditioned for a lead role in 1954 but was rejected. He then moved on to work in theatre as a voice over artist. Puri made his Bollywood debut in 1971 film 'Reshma Aur Shera'. After a decade, he played the role of Khan, a supporting character in Oscar-winning film 'Gandhi'.

The 'Nayak' actor's Hollywood career went on for a while. He was later cast in 'Indiana Jones' as Mola Ram ad in 'Temple of Doom' as well. Director Steven Spielberg, whose offer was rejected by Puri, once claimed that the actor is his favourite villain and one of the best the world will ever produce.


Starring in 200 films in over half-a-dozen languages like Hindi, Marathi, Kannada, Malayalam, Telugu, Tamil and more, Puri made a mark in Bollywood.

Some of Puri's dialogues have become his legacy. From "Mogambo khush hua" in 'Mr India' to "Ja Simran ja, jee le apni zindagi" in 'Dilwale Dulhania Le Jaenge', his dialogues are remembered even today.

Puri passed away on December 27, 2004, due to myelodysplastic syndrome.
