iOS 14 review: Takes privacy to a new high, has something for everyone

The new version is customisable and cuts the clutter in the iPhone.

The one feature that really stands out is the incoming call notification. With iOS 14, you just see a small bar of notification as opposed to the entire screen being hogged by it.

HIGHLIGHT: Widgets, gestures

Every year there are millions who wait for the new Apple iPhone to come out in September. This year, the wait is not just for the iPhone but also for the new version of iOS. However, unlike the iPhone, Apple gives a preview and a chance to try the upcoming version of iOS. So we downloaded the iOS 14 public beta version to get a glimpse into what is in store for iPhone users.

iOS 14 brings customisation to iPhones for the first time in a big way. You can put widgets anywhere on the home screen. You can also use a stack feature to put the most relevant widget on top. Then there is something called App Library that lets you see all the apps. But you can’t recategorise the apps or rename any of these folders. So, yes, there is customisation but you can't have it tailor-made.

The one feature that really stands out is the incoming call notification. With iOS 14, you just see a small bar of notification as opposed to the entire screen being hogged by it. So you could be watching a video on YouTube and the incoming call notification doesn’t block it.

Siri has got a new interface in this version.

Another key feature is the “overhaul” of the Messages app. iMessage now has WhatsApp-like features — you can pin chats at the top and do much more in Groups. Text messages get neatly segregated into categories such as Unknown Senders and Promotions. The clutter can be reduced massively in iOS 14.

Apple has been vocal on privacy and iOS 14 really takes it to another level. You don’t have to share all your photos with any app, so your data remains secure even if there is an external breach. The other cool feature is Back Tap where you can just double-tap or triple tap on the back of the iPhone to trigger a shortcut.

iOS 14 brings a plethora of other features but remember that this is a beta version and still not the final product. iOS 14, as the cliche goes, has something for everyone. A word of caution: if you download the beta version be prepared to face a few bugs here and there.

However, to fix the problems that users are facing, Apple has released iOS 13.3 to those who had signed up for beta testing. Reportedly, iOS 13.3 has fixed quite a few bugs, including the one which is being dubbed as the most ‘annoying’ problem till date.

A large number of users had raised issues with iOS 13 because the apps were apparently refreshing on their own which lead to users losing data. iPhones were automatically refreshing the apps which were previously accessed, a problem which users didn’t face with the previous versions of iOS.

“I was watching a video on YouTube [sic] on my iPhone 11 Pro I pause the video to respond to a text message. I was in iMessage for less than one minute. When I returned to YouTube it reloaded the app and I lost the video I was watching,” stated one of the forum members called Rogifan

After iOS 13.3 release, one of the beta testers took to Twitter to share that Apple had reportedly fixed the issue. He said that he had 32 apps open on his iPhone 11 Pro Max and none of them refreshed.

iOS 13.3 also comes with another minor update. It allows users to control when they want to see Memojis and Animojis.

In Settings > General > Keyboard, you can now turn off Animoji and Memoji Stickers from being displayed on the emoji keyboard.

For the uninitiated, Animojis are 3D, animated emojis that transform familiar emojis to animated messages. Memojis, on the other hand, are personalised Animojis, akin to Snapchat’s Bitomji, that look exactly like the user.
