NEW DELHI: A high-profile Rs 200 crore wedding, hosted by South Africa-based businessmen brothers - Ajay and Atul Gupta, has left the small town of Auli, Uttarakhand in a state of dismay.

Last weekend, the destination wedding for the NRIs turned into a dumping ground after over 240 quintals (24,000 kilogram) of garbage was left behind during the four-day celebrations.

While 150 quintals of waste has been removed so far, there's still a lot left to be done. With 30 workers deployed and three-four trucks assigned daily, the Uttarakhand Municipal Corporation believes to clear the site by Sunday. The Gupta brothers had deposited a user charge of Rs 54,000 with the local authorities. After the clean-up, the NRI family has agreed to pay the entire clean-up cost, including manual labour and vehicles.

Earlier this month, a PIL was filed stating the extensive wedding preparations were damaging the environment. Around the same time, the Guptas had deposited security money worth Rs 3 crore as per Nainital High Court's orders with the Chamoli district administration.

As per the High Court's instructions, the District Administration and Pollution Control Board will submit a detailed report on the harm caused to the environment due to the waste by July 7. The hearing on the refund of the deposit is scheduled for the next day.

The court had also asked a group of 13 officials from the Forest Department, the State Pollution Control Board, the Chamoli District Administration, the Uttarakhand Jal Sansthan, the Revenue Department and the Public Works Department to monitor and videograph the weekend wedding. It barred the use of helicopters at the ski destination, and limited the number of guests to 150 people only.

Uttarakhand Chief Minister Trivendra Singh Rawat, Baba Ramdev, Katrina Kaif, Badshah, Kailash Kher were among the VIPs who attended the grand celebrations.

The Chief Minister had defended the marriage saying environmental concerns were not justifiable and Auli could be developed as a big tourist destination.

The wedding celebrations of Suryakant, son of Ajay Gupta, took place in Auli from June 18 to 20, while the marriage of Atul Gupta's son Shashank was held from June 20 to 22.
