After rolling out dark mode for its desktop website, Facebook confirmed that it is testing dark mode for mobile.
Facebook has had mixed fortunes the past few weeks. User engagement has been steadily increasing, with people stuck at home and in need of distractions. However, the company’s decision to not moderate content on its platform caused an exodus of advertisers. Mark Zuckerberg assuaged investors, insisting the company’s future is rosy. But for users of the popular social network, things might be about to get dark.

After rolling out dark mode for its desktop website, Facebook confirmed that it is testing dark mode for mobile. The feature has been made available to a small group of users globally, a spokesperson told the tech website, The Verge, on Sunday.

The mobile version will cut down on glare, particularly in low-light settings. This will be helpful for users staring at their screens well past midnight, scroll through the news feeds, as the struggle to fall asleep. Facebook did not mention a timeline for when it will roll out dark mode for all users.



Some users who received the update took to social media to share screenshots of how the app interface will look in dark mode. Facebook’s mobile app will the last in the family to get dark mode. WhatsApp and Instagram already have this feature, as does Facebook Messenger. Microblogging platform Twitter has had it for a while now, and Google introduced it for its apps earlier this year.

The benefits of dark mode are twofold. By letting users change the background colour of an app to black, it becomes easier to view and more aesthetically pleasing. Secondly, dark mode means that a large number of pixels on the screen will be off at any given point in time, thereby helping to preserve battery life.

After the Cambridge Analytica scandal, Zuckerberg found himself in hot water again, but this time, it was not because of the breach of user data or privacy concerns.It was over political ads.

The political ads on Facebook had always been the centre of conversation and there had been much conjecture over their accuracy (or lack thereof). In 2019, in a speech at Georgetown University in mid-October, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg said, ‘We don’t fact-check political ads’.

"We don't do this to help politicians, but because we think people should be able to see for themselves what politicians are saying. And if content is newsworthy, we also won't take it down even if it would otherwise conflict with many of our standards."

For the uninitiated, Facebook employs a third-party fact-checker to ensure the ads on the platform are accurate, but political ads are apparently exempted from the fact-checking.
