NEW DELHI: A Chinese soldier who strayed across the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in Eastern Ladakh where a terse border stand off has been on since early May will returned by India at the earliest after completion of formalities, the Indian Army has said.

The PLA soldier, identified as Corporal Wang Ya Long, was apprehended by the army in the sensitive Demchok sector on Monday and was given medical assistance by soldiers, including oxygen support given the harsh climatic conditions on the border.

“A request has also been received from the PLA about the whereabouts of the missing soldier. As per established protocols, he will be returned back to Chinese officials at the Chushul–Moldo meeting point after completion of formalities,” the official statement said.

There have been incidents in the past when Chinese soldiers have been apprehended on the disputed border by Indian troops and existing mechanisms cover the protocol to be followed in such cases. In 2013 also, a Chinese soldier who fell into a ravine after a jostling match on the border, was rescued by Indian troops and handed back safely after medical assistance.

“The PLA soldier has been provided medical assistance including oxygen, food and warm clothes to protect him from the vagaries of extreme altitude and harsh climatic conditions,” the Indian Army said.
