Saradha scam, Narada string op lead to losing sting in West Bengal polls

While “rampant corruption and strong arm tactics” of the Mamata Banerjee government are still a talking point, voters are making only a fleeting reference to the scams.

Some voters maintain there is corruption at the highest level and the two cases encourage the lower rung to engage in money making.
Both the Saradha scam and the Narada sting operation, that put several senior Trinamool Congress leaders in the dock, seem to have lost steam in the Lok Sabha elections despite BJP’s efforts to rake up the issues in Bengal.

While “rampant corruption and strong arm tactics” of the Mamata Banerjee government are still a talking point, voters are making only a fleeting reference to the scams. However, some voters maintain that this proves there is corruption at the highest level and the two cases encourage the lower rung to engage in money making without apprehension.

Another factor seems to be former TMC leader Mukul Roy’s induction into the BJP. Once Mamata’s right hand man, Roy was named in the Saradha scam but has not been summoned by CBI for questioning since he switched to the BJP. Moreover, BJP’s campaign on this issue is blunted when fingers are pointed at Roy’s alleged involvement. BJP leaders maintain that Roy’s utility for them due to his former proximity to Mamata and the TMC brass far outweighs the charges against him.

“No leader from BJP was involved in the Saradha chit fund scam. Those who are in our party now were involved when they were in TMC. Mukul Roy was questioned by CBI for nine hours (before he joined BJP) and he cooperated in the probe but none of Mamata Banerjee’s party leaders are cooperating in the investigation,” BJP national secretary Rahul Sinha told ET.

“Those found guilty will not be kept in the party,” Sinha added. Time could be another factor. The Saradha scam was exposed in 2013 and the Narada sting operation came to light in March 2016. Mamata Banerjee has slammed prime minister Narendra Modi for dragging the case and not taking action despite being in power for five years. At a rally in Cooch Behar on April 8, Banerjee said: “Modi talked a lot about Saradha and Narada. The Saradha scam took place during CPM rule. Have you arrested a single person from CPM or Congress? Your ally CBI is probing the scam since 2013. It has been six years. Have you been able to return the money to a single person?”
