In a repeat of the fire tragedy in an Ahmedabad Covid Hospital in August last where eight people were charred to death, five people lost their lives in another fire in a Rajkot Covid Hospital in the wee hours of Friday.

33 Covid patients were being treated in Uday Shivanand Hospital in Rajkot. The fire brigade received its first call at about 12.20 am as the fire broke out in the second floor in the intensive care unit allegedly because of a short circuit in the electrical equipments.

The state government has announced a compensation of Rs. 4 lakh for the next of kins for the deceased and assigned Additional Chief Secretary AK Rakesh to probe into the incident.


President Ramnath Kovind expressed his grief over the incident. “The death of Covid-19 patients in a fire accident at a hospital in Rajkot, Gujarat is a tragedy beyond words. In this agonising time, I offer my heartfelt empathy for the bereaved families. I pray for speedy recovery for the injured.” He tweeted.

“Extremely pained by the loss of lives due to a hospital fire in Rajkot. My thoughts are with those who lost their loved ones in this unfortunate tragedy. Praying for a quick recovery of the injured. The administration is ensuring all possible assistance to those affected”, the prime Minister tweeted.

The incident also attracted the attention of the Apex Court, which expressed its concern and maintained that such incidents are not acceptable.

It may be mentioned here that this is the fifth such case in the Covid hospitals in the state with the worst being the one in Ahmedabad where eight people had lost their lives in August.
