Chennai is gearing up to welcome Chinese President Xi Jinping who is arriving here on Friday to hold bilateral talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi at Mamallapuram.

With two more days to go for Modi-Xi summit, work is in full swing at Mamallapuram to give a facelift to the whole town.

At Mamallapuram, municipality workers are sprucing up the town while another set of workers are erecting temporary structures to beautify the town and to conceal whatever the authorities consider a potential eyesore.

Tourist entry is restricted at shore temple and all other monuments. Shops along the shore temple leading to the shoreline have remained shut since October 1. "District collector held a meeting with us and asked us to shut down business for two weeks," said a shopkeeper.

The Tamil Nadu police will assign around 8,000 police personnel at all traffic intersections from ITC Grand Chola Hotel in Guindy, where the Chinese delegation will be staying, to Mamallapuram.

Police patrol vehicles are assigned at all traffic junctions and vehicles fitted with CCTV cameras will be patrolling on the route to Mamallapuram. At least 1,000 police personnel from Kancheepuram district and 600 police personnel from Tiruvallur district have been assigned for security.

Police have started checking the vulnerable point along the routes and have started to verify employees of establishment closer to the route. A check was done at a petrol pump in Tirusulam to verify employees on Wednesday.
