The present NRC has several confusions on whether refugee certificates are acceptable or not.

Guwahati: Assam finance minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday welcomed Union home minister Amit Shah’s statement in the Rajya Sabha on a pan-India National Register of Citizens (NRC), in which Assam would also be included, despite having an NRC of its own.

Sarma said the Assam government and the state BJP have informed Shah that the NRC brought out from Assam on August 31 was unacceptable. “We did not accept the NRC as those whose names should have been there, are not there, while those whose names should not have been there, are there.”

“The present NRC cannot be accepted. Shah had stated earlier that the national NRC will be rolled out after the Citizenship Amendment Bill (CAB) is brought out. The present NRC has several confusions on whether refugee certificates are acceptable or not. We feel the NRC prepared by former state coordinator Prateek Hajela has failed to fulfil the aspirations of the people of Assam.”
