New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Friday spoke out against large political congregations being held across the country and the fact that 80% of people were not wearing masks. It has sought harsher measures to be incorporated to check the latest Covid spike in India.

“Most people are not wearing masks. Rest have masks hanging on their jaws,” the bench observed. “There are SOPs, policies and guidelines, but there is no will,” the bench said, while expressing concern over the sudden spike in cases.

“Things have gone from bad to worse. Nothing has been done in the last three weeks,” the bench, led by Justice Ashok Bhushan and including Justices MR Shah and R Subhash Reddy, observed.

The bench expressed concern over a recent instance in which a fire in Gujarat destroyed an ICU unit killing many patients and sought a report from the government on this. “Take concrete action,” the bench told SG Tushar Mehta, such as identifying nodal officers responsible for fire safety and regular inspections by civic authorities. Mehta said action would be taken on this front in two days and directions issued to all hospitals pan-India. The central government, through the SG, said necessary corrective action was being taken and a new SOP had been issued. Some more measures will be taken. The government sought more time to place before court the measures it had taken so far. The court will take up the case on Tuesday.

National Status
In its latest affidavit submitted to court, the government claimed that India presently had 9.2 million Covid cases, with over 0.44 million active cases, which make up only 4.75% of the current cumulative cases.
