“The initiative was taken by the party and we found a lot of support from schools and colleges,” said BJP spokesperson KT Raghavan.
New Delhi: The decision to choose Mamallapuram as the venue for informal summit was a conscious move, which is likely to give a boost to India’s Act East Policy because of the region’s historical trade link with Fujian in east China.

Chinese President Xi Jinping had once served as governor of Fujian. Xi’s October 11-12 visit would be his third trip to India since 2014 as President.

At the summit, PM Modi is expected to highlight India’s inclusive Indo-Pacific vision, of which Act East policy is a critical element and which includes China, allaying Beijing’s apprehensions on New Delhi’s Indo-Pacific construct, an official said.

Mamallapuram was chosen as a venue for its world heritage tag “with a strong Chinese link” and the PM’s view that “India needs to show other parts of India, particularly south, to the world”, the official told ET.

Xi is a history buff and it was evident to PM Modi during the first informal in Wuhan, so India was looking for a venue with a world heritage tag, the official said.

Mamallapuram was listed a world heritage site in 1984. Chinese Buddhist monk Xuanzang had visited Kanchipuram during the Pallava dynasty.

Mamallapuram w a s a m a j o r Pallava port city in the 7th century. Bodhidharma, who spread Zen B u d d h i s m t o China, had set sail from the coast of Tamil Nadu and landed in present day Guangdong (Canton) province.

A small temple has been constructed at a place where he landed and for mer President Pranab Mukherjee had visited the site in 2016.

There was a major trade link between the Pallava and Chola kingdoms of south India with the southeast coast of China, particularly the province of Fujian and city of Quanzhou.

The discovery of coins and potteries of China’s Song dynasty are a testimony to that.
