3 dead in police firing as violence hits Bengaluru over 'derogatory' social media post

Police sources said a person said to be a close relative of a Congress MLA allegedly shared a social media post that enraged members of a community .

Violence grips Bengaluru over a Facebook post, 3 dead, 110 arrested
At least three people have been killed in police firing after a mob rampaged through Bengaluru's Pulakeshi Nagar and vandalised a police station and a Congress legislator's residence after his relative shared a "derogatory" social media post.

Police said Wednesday morning that more than 60 of their personnel were also injured in the clashes and that 110 people were arrested on charges of rioting. Prohibitory orders under Section 144 were declared across the city and curfew was declared in Banaswadi police sub-division limits.

A person said to be a close relative of Congress MLA Akhanda Srinivas Murthy allegedly shared a Facebook post that enraged members of a community, police sources said, adding it provoked the arson and rioting. He has since been arrested.


The mob which gathered after 8 pm on Tuesday vandalised MLA Murthy's residence and damaged the vehicles parked there, before targeting the police station and police vehicles.

Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa appealed to people to maintain peace and not to pay heed to the rumours and in a series of tweets condemned the mob attack that took place in East Bengaluru through the night.

“I appeal to you not to react to the situation and maintain peace,” Yediyurappa tweeted.

The CM who was discharged from the hospital two days ago after getting treated for Covid-19, is expected to hold a meeting today with his cabinet colleagues and senior police officials to discuss the incident.

Karnataka Congress chief D K Shivakumar condemned the incident and requested people not to take law into their hands. The Congress has called a meeting of the party MLAs from Bengaluru today afternoon to discuss the issue.

Congress MLA and former minister B Z Zameer Ahmed Khan tweeted: "I am hopeful that police will take action against all those who are responsible for this. I also request everyone to stay calm and maintain peace in the area."
