Why Nirmala Sitharaman is talking about 'One Nation, One Ration Card'
India’s Finance Minister announced the nationwide rollout of a One Nation One Ration Card scheme, that will ensure migrant workers get their supplies; here’s how it works.
A major gripe for many people across the country is that ration cards are only valid in the locality that they are assigned in, and the differing systems in each city.
The nationwide rollout of this system - expected to be complete by 2021 - will ensure that ration cards become portable, both intra state and inter state.
To make this work, the government will rely on biometrics that will ensure anybody can pick up staples from a fair price shop in the city they reside in.
This move is not a sudden one and was initially expected to rollout in 2020, but was delayed due to various issues that the government has been working to fix.
