NEW DELHI: The Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) along with the World Intellectual Property Organization will release the Global Innovation Index (GII) 2019 on July 24.

The index provides detailed metrics about the innovation performance of 129 countries and economies around the world. Its 80 indicators explore a broad vision of innovation, including political environment, education, infrastructure and business sophistication.

It ranked India as the 57th most innovative nation in the world in 2018 higher than its 60th position the year before that.

Themed around medical innovation this year, the index will analyse the medical innovation landscape of the next decade, looking at how technological and non-technological medical innovation will transform the delivery of healthcare worldwide.

It will also explore the role and dynamics of medical innovation in the future of healthcare, and the potential influence this may have on economic growth.

Many Asian nations including China, India, Philippines, Cambodia and Vietnam have been steadily improving their ranking over the last five years. Four of the top five innovation clusters are in Asia, based on patents and publishing. San Francisco is the only innovation cluster outside Asia among the top five.
