Highlights

  • You don't have to wait for your employer to share the PF statement at the end of the year to know the PF balance.
  • You can check the balance using the Umang App, EPFO portal, EPFO app, sending an SMS, or by just giving a missed call.
For the employees working in an organisation, knowing their provident fund (PF) balance has become much easier now. As an employee and a member of the Employees' Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO), you don't have to wait for your employer to share your PF statement at the end of the year to know the balance.

You can check the PF balance anytime from the comfort of your home or even office using any one of these five options - Umang App, EPFO portal, EPFO app, SMS, or by just giving a missed call.

Here are five ways you can check your provident fund balance.

I. Using the Umang app
Employees would now be able to view their PF balance on mobile phones with the help of Umang app. Umang app was launched by the government last year and provides access to various government services at one place. One can view EPF Passbook, raise claim and even track Claim using the app. To get started, you need to complete a one-time registration using your phone number.

II. Using the EPFO portal
Instead of the unified portal, users will now be able to access their PF passbooks on a different website run by the EPFO. The unified portal can, however, still be used for transactional services like transfers.

To view the PF passbook on the portal you need to have your account tagged with your Universal Account Number (UAN). You can download or print the passbook from the website.

Step 1: The member passbook is available at www.epfindia.gov.in

Step 2: Click on 'For Employees' under 'Our Services'

Alternatively, you can directly go to the page:

To access the passbook, make sure your UAN is activated by the employer. Remember, UAN is provided by the EPFO but it has to be verified and activated by your employer. So, if yours has already been activated, use it along with your password to log in and check your passbook balance.

The passbook facility is not available for members of establishments that are exempt under the EPF Scheme, 1952. If you still try to log in, you will get this message: "Passbook not available to this Member-id as this pertains to the exempted establishment (i.e. Trust). Requested to contact your employer."

III. By sending an SMS
If your UAN is registered with EPFO, you can get details of your latest contribution and the PF balance by sending an SMS to 7738299899. You need to send this message: EPFOHO UAN ENG. ENG is the first three characters of the preferred language. So, if you want to receive the message in Marathi, then type in EPFOHO UAN MAR.

The facility is available in English, Hindi, Punjabi, Gujarati, Marathi, Kannada, Telugu, Tamil, Malayalam, and Bengali. EPFO can only send details of members available with it. So, make sure your UAN is seeded with your bank account, Aadhaar and PAN, else ask your employer to seed them for you.

IV. By giving a missed call
If you are already registered on the UAN portal, by giving a missed call on 011-22901406 from your registered mobile number will fetch you the details. Here, too, make sure your UAN is seeded with your bank account number, Aadhaar and PAN, else ask your employer to seed them for you.

V. By using the EPFO app
The m-sewa app of EPFO can be downloaded from Google Play Store. Once the app is downloaded, click on 'Member' and then on 'Balance/passbook'. Thereafter, enter your UAN and registered mobile number.
