How to change bank, personal details in ITR after filing it

After uploading ITR, if you want to make changes in, say, your bank account, address etc., you can update them through 'Change ITR Form Particulars' option on the e-filing portal.

The time to file your income tax return (ITR) for FY 2018-19 is over now. August 31 was the deadline to file your return. For those of you who have filed their ITRs for the year and want to update or change certain contact or banking details, they can still do it.

According to the income tax department's website, "After upload of the ITR, if any change occurs in taxpayers Bank Account, Address, Mobile number and e-mail id, then taxpayer can update these changes through 'Change ITR Form Particulars'. Any update can be made only prior to processing of the return." It usually takes a month, from the date of filing, for the tax department to process tax returns. Let us say after filing your return, you want to make a change in your permanent address or you want update the mobile number.

"Some times it happens that wrong bank detail is entered at the time of filing the ITR which will result in non-receipt of the refund. By way of this tool, the taxpayer can change the bank details without revision of ITR. Similar is the case with the email ID, contact number and address. Thus, the taxpayer can change these details without furnishing Revised ITR. This is a convenient way for the taxpayer to change/update their basic details before processing of the return," explains Abhishek Soni, CEO and co-founder,, an ITR filing website.

If you want to update such details in your ITR form, then follow these steps.

Step 1: Login to the 'e-Filing' Portal

Step 2: Go to the 'My Account' menu located at upper-left side of the page

Then click on 'Service Request'. Here you will have to select the 'Request Type' as 'New Request' and select the 'Request Category' as 'Change ITR Form Particulars'. Then click 'Submit'.

Step 3: Enter 'Acknowledgement number' of ITR and provide the necessary details. Then click 'Submit'.

Here is how you can view the status of your request.

Step 1: Login to 'e-Filing' Portal

Step 2: Go to the 'My Account' menu located at upper-left side of the page. Here select 'Service Request'. And then select the 'Request Type' as 'View Request' and choose the 'Request Category' as 'Change ITR Form Particulars'.

Step 3: Click 'Submit'

Step 4: Click on the 'Transaction ID'
